Bosch Targets Chip-Scale Diamond NV Center Quantum Sensors, Establishes Bosch Quantum Sensing with Element Six

Release time:

2025-04-24

Previously, Bosch—a major European automotive chip and components manufacturer—announced that it would spin off its quantum sensor startup and establish a joint venture with synthetic diamond maker Element Six, named Bosch Quantum Sensing.

The joint venture is headquartered in Ludwigsburg, Germany, and currently employs 30 people.Bosch will serve as the primary partner and take charge of operations.Element Six will hold a 25% stake, with both parties agreeing not to disclose further financial details.

Quantum sensing represents a key technological focus for Bosch. The collaboration between the two companies is built upon Bosch’s ten years of foundational research. This has successfully developed a quantum sensor prototype with the same size as modern smartphones. The joint venture's long-term goal is to integrate quantum sensors into chips.

Element Six is a subsidiary of De Beers, the diamond company, which itself is owned by the mining giant Umicore. It is currently scaling up production of diamond substrates to manufacture 4-inch single-crystal diamond wafers.

Synthetic diamonds grown with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers can detect magnetic fields down to picotesla levels at room temperature. This allows diamond quantum sensors to serve applications spanning aviation navigation to medical technologies.

In the mobile domain, diamond-based quantum sensors could enable robust navigation capabilities in the future, complementing traditional GPS systems.Bosch estimates that by the mid-2030s, the global market potential for medical and mobility applications will reach approximately $6 billion annually.

Stefan Hartung, Chairman of the Board of Management at Bosch, said:Quantum sensors are a future technology with immense potential. They will bring fundamental changes to many sectors of our economy and improve people's lives. When establishing this new company, we emphasized the strategic importance of this technology for Bosch. As an innovation leader in commercial quantum sensors, we will collaborate with Element Six to further extend our technological leadership.

Katrin Kobe, CEO of Bosch Quantum Sensing, stated:"Through our collaboration with Element Six, we aim to commercialize quantum sensor technology and enable industrial-scale production. This will lay the foundation for innovative applications while setting new benchmarks in precision and efficiency."

Siobhán Duffy, CEO of Element Six, stated:"Through the Bosch-Element Six joint venture, we are combining our synthetic diamond expertise with Bosch’s quantum sensing capabilities to unlock new possibilities in critical fields such as healthcare and navigation."
