On April 18, it was announced by the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, that a research team led by Ye Jichun from the Laboratory of Photoelectric Information Materials and Devices has successfully developed a new technology for the efficient fabrication of flexible perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cells. The team achieved a certified power conversion efficiency of 23.8% on a 1.09 cm² device, setting a new world record for this type of solar cell.

Perovskite tandem solar cells are widely regarded as a critical breakthrough for next-generation photovoltaic technology due to their combined advantages of high efficiency and low cost.Flexible CIGS tandem solar cells, because of being lightweight, highly efficient and radiation-resistant, are suitable for use in areas with limited space and weight sensitivity, such as drones, wearable devices, space satellites, etc.CIGS thin-film solar cells, as the 'bottom layer' of the tandem structure, have unique advantages in developing flexible solar devices.

The research team proposed and developed an innovative anti-solvent seed layer strategy, which decouples the dissolution and adsorption processes of SAMs (self-assembled monolayers) to achieve synergistic optimization of the interface and structure.Meanwhile, by pre-mixing perovskite crystal seeds into the anti-solvent, the wetting behavior of the precursor solution was effectively improved, the crystallization quality of the film was enhanced, and ultimately a robust combination between the perovskite top cell and CIGS bottom cell was achieved. This strategy obviously raised the preparation consistency, operation stability and mechanical reliability of tandem devices, providing key technology support for flexible perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cells' development.

Ye Jichun said, "This new technology not only made important breakthroughs in the efficiency and stability of flexible tandem solar cells, but also has good mass production potential, and is expected to promote next-generation high-performance solar products into real life."
